Learning and growing with RMHC-Madison

February 22nd, 2023 | News

Nonprofit internships can be some of the most rewarding work experiences. RMHC-Madison has grown its internship program in recent years providing opportunities for individuals to gain beneficial work experience in operations, art programming, development, and marketing. With a small staff, our interns work closely with our department leads building lifelong professional relationships. More than that, RMHC-Madison interns get to experience the direct impact their work has on the families we serve.

We would like to introduce our current interns, Bailey Andres, Brigid Jurgens, Samuel Turner, and Lauren Elias. Each of our interns has a passion that inspired their professional development and interest in interning with RMHC.

Bailey Andes, Operations Intern

My name is Bailey Andes, and I am excited to be a part of the RMHC-Madison team! I am an Edgewood College graduate with a degree in Communications and a Minor in Spanish. I first heard about RMHC through my friend and the current RMHC-Madison Director of Development, Deborah Still.

My personal life has included some medical struggles, many of them coming early in my lifetime. Looking back on these experiences, I consider myself very lucky to have had the opportunity to stay at the UW Hospital. The ability to stay on-site with the doctors that saved my life on multiple occasions definitely made a difference in my ability to recover and keep moving in a positive direction with my life. Thus, the RMHC-Madison’s dedication to keeping sick children close to their families immediately struck a chord with me. I hope that I can help carry out this mission as a volunteer and aid the RMHC-Madison team in any way that I can. In my free time I like to read, listen to music, and watch movies.

Brigid Jurgens, Art Intern

My name is Brigid Jurgens, and I am so excited to be working in the Ronald McDonald House Art Room as an art intern. I am currently in my final semester as an Art Therapy student at Edgewood College, and I am so excited to have this chance to further connect and work within the community. At Edgewood, I am also minoring in Art and Psychology as they are some of my favorite courses. I love any opportunity to make art and work with others. My favorite art mediums are paint, printmaking, clay, markers, and pens. I am hoping to bring lots of fun ideas, projects, and new materials to the art room in hopes of meeting lots of new young artists or any families who are looking for an easy way to destress. When I’m not making art, I also enjoy reading mysteries, watching movies, and participating in theatre. This internship experience will be so important to my growth as a future Art Therapist and I am thrilled to get working and get creative!

Samuel Turner, Marketing and Communications Intern

I am delighted and honored to have the opportunity to join the Ronald McDonald House Charities family as the Marketing and Communications intern for this Spring semester. I am currently attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a major in Communication Arts: Communication Science and Rhetorical Studies. This semester, I was interested in finding an internship that would allow me to gain foundational experience in working with media and marketing. When I found out that the Ronald McDonald House was looking for interns, I immediately applied. When I was a child, my family and I stayed at RMHC while my sister was struggling with serious health issues. The Ronald McDonald House provided a home and support to us. Their support and resources allowed my sister to get the care she needed, and it allowed us to be with her along the journey of recovery.

This opportunity of interning with the RMHC-Madison is a way for me to give back to the community and home that helped my family and me. I am so excited and grateful I have this opportunity to help in various ways throughout the organization.

Lauren Elias, Development Intern

I am a junior at UW-Madison studying communications with certificates in digital studies and history. I have been an intern on the development team at RMHC-Madison since summer 2022. I am excited to continue learning and working for such a great organization. In my free time, I enjoy running, yoga, and hanging out with my friends and family. I also danced competitively until college and now teach dance to preschoolers which is so fun! I have a passion for giving back to my community and I am so lucky to have found a place like RMHC!
